At our most recent committe meeting the 2009 budget was revealed. Down close to 35%. No surprise as that is about the decline in membership. What was a surprise is that the committee put forth some of its "priorities" for course maintaince that make no sense what so ever and you could easily read the gree keeper's mind. With this budget you expect what ? I think course conditioning is going to take a big hit this year, not only our club but other places as well. This post from eagleparbirdie.com pretty much sums up the state of golf for 2009.
Critical solutions are the part of life. But I think obviously a good and nice budget is always helpful. But if you manage your small budget you can easily meet the demands of your golf community.

These are sad scenarios. Businesses closing down left and right. Unfortunately, we don't have any choice but accept these things. What the heck! If we had to self-serve so we can still play our favorite game, so be it. Surely, we won't get hurt if we ran after our balls from time to time? I won't mind.

I think all over the country members need to be ready this year. I agree with you that conditions are going to decline due to budget cuts all over the US. What is amazing is all of these "members" are successful business people and are squeezing their own businesses tighter than ever before and expecting better results than before. It simply does not work that way!
With fewer and fewer available resorces, I have seen most clubs become self-serve. This is not the fault of the staff as they can only do three or four things at one time and not nine or ten. HAHA
